Storage configuration for virtualization platform

At this stage of the installation, you need to choose the storage configuration for the future system. Possible partitioning options include installation on LVM (with a thin pool for virtual machine images) and software Btrfs RAID array. The partitioning scheme is determined by the "Layout Scheme" parameter.

• LVM — corresponds to the item ext4 (LVM). With this partitioning scheme, a volume group (VG) will be created with a name matching the installing distribution (for example, when installing Alt Virtualization PVE Edition, a VG named pve will be created). The following Logical Volumes (LVs) will also be created:
  • root — the root volume ('/') with the selected file system (ext4).
  • swap — the swap partition volume. It is recommended to create a swap volume of at least 2 GiB.
  • data — the Thin Pool volume.

  By default, the sizes of the listed volumes are optimally set based on the total allocated space. If the total size is not changed, then all of the disk space will be used. Also, by default, approximately 1-2 GiB of free space remains untouched in the VG (this can be useful for creating a snapshot of the system).

  You can also add new volumes via Volumes Table (or edit/remove existing). You may choose layout approach for them - either to create new volume as separate partititon (this can be useful with, for example, /boot), or as additional LV to VG. Filesystem type for new volume will match root's (ext4).

• Btrfs RAID — installation with the creation of a Btrfs RAID array. An array will be created in the selected mode with a root subvolume. The following modes are supported:
• RAID 0 — striping without fault tolerance.
• RAID 1 — mirrored disk array.
• RAID 10 (RAID 1+0) — mirrored array where data is written sequentially to multiple disks, similar to RAID 0.
• Single — uses only one disk.
There is also an option to add additional volumes (or subvolumes). When you select the placement type "Separate btrfs volume", individual partitions on the disks will be created and assembled into the corresponding btrfs RAID volume (this allows you to limit the volume size, making it independent of the root). When you choose the option "Additional btrfs subvolume", a new subvolume will be created within the root volume. Also, in PVE distro, subvolume for virtualization-related data will be created automatically (mounted as /var/lib/pve/local-btrfs)
